Black cat #10
Black cat #10 — Black cat teams with Wolverine, so of course Felicia and Logan are on the run from pretty much everybody living on Madripoor — an entire island of nogoodniks! (aka: ne’er-do-wells) (Don’t say you never learn anything from these columns…) Besides the Madripoorian murder squads, Kade Kilgore (from the Hellfire Club) has marked them for death, and you won’t believe who concerns collect! (Batman?… Oh, yeah… probably not…. ) Written by Jed Mackay with art by Kris Anka and a swell cover by J. Scott Campbell!
Strange Academy #1
Dr. unusual #4 and unusual Academy #1 — The first is by mark Waid, Kev Walker, and Phil Noto and the latter is by Skottie young and Humberto Ramos! In the former, Dr. Druid returns! Uh… why? Isn’t he dead or just incompetent (or both?!)? Or maybe, (it says here) something much more sinister is brewing in the halls of the McCarthy medical Institute? Meanwhile, in the debuting unusual Academy book, we are introduced to a Sorcerer school in the marvel Universe. I think this might be the first time for that, but then again, somebody could blink and it would turn out there have been 4,963 different unusual Academies and we would never be the wiser. Y’know… no, I better not think about this too hard… It may not seem like it, but I’m really looking forward to reading both of these issues! Academy also features brother Voodoo, the ancient One, the Scarlet Witch, Magik, Hellstrom, and all your other favorite marvel magicians/professors.

Marvel #1 (of 6) — Apparently, Alex Ross had a slightly different vision for the original Marvels series — and it debuts today whatsoever good comics shops (and maybe even in a bad one or two…). What he was originally thinking was an anthology of stories — by unique, exceptional talents — with possibly some of them working on marvel characters for the very first time. This begins in this first issue on the stands today.
This inaugural issue kicks it all off with superstar artists Frank Espinosa (Rocketo, Looney Tunes) telling an unusual Spider-Man story and Steve impolite (Nexus) teaming up with Kurt Busiek (Marvels, Avengers) for an Avengers story, framed by Ross and Steve Darnall (Uncle Sam, Marvels) presenting a tale of the dread dreamland nightmare and his risk to the entire marvel Universe… and possibly beyond.
Creators lined up for subsequent issues include Adam Hughes, bill Sienkiewicz, Dan Brereton, and more. some of these names are making me nervous. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait six years for these potentially fantastic stories to appear. It might be good for this to be wrapped up by next Christmas! Covers by Alex Ross.
Spider-Man Noir #1
Spider-Man Noir #1 (of 5) — This promises plenty of murder and mystery in the Mighty marvel Manner! (Whatever that is these days…) Margaret Stohl, Juan Ferreyra, and Dave Rapoza offer lots of 1939 atmosphere in this odd little Spidey time-displaced miniseries. Unfortunately, a dame is murdered at the Black cat nightclub, and all clues point overseas. I’m not sure that the wall-crawler’s webbing will be helpful for this case, but I’ve been wrong before.

Web of Black Widow — This paperback collects the recent five-issue miniseries of the same name by writer Jody Houser and artists Stephen Mooney and Jung-Geun Yoon. Y’know, I keep hearing about this Black Widow film supposedly coming soon… (May 1?)

Flash #750 — Covers by Howard porter (main), Nicola Scott (1940s variant), Gary Frank (1950s variant), Nick Derington (1960s variant), José Luis García-López (1970s variant), Gabriele Dell’otto (1980s variant), Francesco Mattina (1990s variant), Jim Lee (2000s variant), and Francis Manapul (2010s variant). If you can’t make up your mind about which one to get, DC’s also providing their typical blank variant — so you can dream up your very own cover! (Or you can go to a comics show and get your fave artist to do it!) Hey! It’s also an 80-Page Giant! way to go nostalgic, DC and how cool to have Barry Allen involved!
Another Flash-Fact! DC has indicated that this issue is the pay-off to the storyline that debuted way back in The Flash #50! (Yikes!) Barry’s having issues with the speed Force, a new foe – Paradox – is causing all sorts of other problems, and Paradox’s herald Godspeed is tasked with trapping the Flash family! Tales from across the generations by an all-star lineup of writers and artists!
Strange Adventures #1
Strange Adventures #1 (of 12) — It’s practically enough to just say “written by Tom King and art by Mitch Gerads” (AKA the former Mister miracle creative team from last year). this time around, King and Gerads are welcoming another fan-favorite artist (Evan “Doc” Shaner), and the trio will be presenting an adventure of “rocketman” Adam Strange. Although it’s probably safe to say that this Adam unusual series will be vastly different in storytelling from what we’ve seen in the last 62 years (!) because Adam’s debut (in showcase #17 in 1958!… Yikes, I’m older than Adam… but not by much…). Don’t miss this first issue — people will be talking about it, and copies may go fast! (BTW, there’s also another surprise hero in this series who will have to choose between saving Adam and saving the world!)
